In today’s fast-paced job market, sourcers play a crucial role in identifying and hiring top talent. However, finding the right candidate can be a challenging task that requires a combination of skills, experience, and knowledge plus doing the right research.

Research is the cornerstone of a sourcer’s success. It involves understanding the job requirements, the industry, and the market trends. Before beginning any sourcing activity, it is crucial to research what you are looking for, what it might be called by other companies or known as in other industries, and where to find it. This involves studying job descriptions, researching industry-specific keywords, and learning about relevant associations, universities, and other organizations that are relevant to the job and industry.

Sourcers should have an organized collection of resources. This can come in the form of bookmarks, favorites, or a Google Sheet, but the key is to have everything in one place where you can easily retrieve it. Keeping a record of your research can save time and effort on future hiring activity and prevent you from duplicating work that has already been done. You may also build a list of search strings and research activities that can also be shared with your team. This list can include synonyms to keywords, a list of competitors, relevant associations and universities, Facebook groups and more.

In addition to tracking research activities, it is also essential to stay up to date on industry news and trends. This involves staying informed about the latest developments in the industry, including new technologies, changes in regulations, and emerging trends. Sourcers should regularly read industry-specific publications and attend conferences and seminars to stay informed and network with other professionals in their field.

Research is the foundation of any successful sourcing activity. It requires dedication, organization, and a commitment to ongoing learning and development. By taking the time to research job requirements, industry trends, and market conditions, sourcers can identify the right candidates and make informed hiring decisions that lead to long-term success for their organizations.
